Are you legally required to disclose to a new employer that you have certain condition like epilepsy? |
I don't want to miss out on the job just because of it. Only if having the seizure could affect the safety of yourself or others. For example, a job involving driving or operating machinery. If it doesn't hamper your ability to do the job, it should not be necessary. If you however fill out a medical form for insurance, they may open it and read it to find it. This is not legal as your medical information to the insurance company should be private. See if you can return them directly to the company. Be aware and take notes on any job of when you did such actions and note if you get reprimands, for what and when as you may have actions to take if the reprimands only occurred after filing for insurance. It's probably not a legal requirement, but I know someone who lost a job because of it. It was bad form for someone to have a turn in front of major client - and no one knew what the hell was going on - or how to deal with it. You've got to consider how it will affect those around you and if it will affect the role you are going for. In this girl's case, they said if it had been disclosed at the outset it could've been dealt with appropriately. you dont have to tell them! but if as above you put yourself or others safty at risk its not such a big deal i know peolpe like you and some times they need help. so i do keep an eye out for them aslo in australia most companys send staff members on first aid course. if some one has epilepsy. or another typr of illness so i dont think you should hide it. Only if the job is something like a pilot or a school bus driver, where you'd be placing others at risk if you had a seizure. only if you have a condition that will keep you from performing the duties of the position you are appling for. if you dont tell them and you have a seizure and get hurt you won't get workmens comp. and they will probally fire you It would be discriminatory of them to not hire you because of it if it wouldn't hamper your ability to do the work. US: Quite the opposite - HIPAA allows you to keep an amazing amount of stuff secret. I don't know, but please don't put your safety or the safety of those around you at risk. |
