My dog has epilepsy (20 characters)?

My dog has epilepsy, he's getting medication for it and all.
But since a couple of days it's not going well at all.
He gets a lot of seizures so we've been giving him valium for two days now (the vet told us to do so). But he still got 3 seizures today so I'm really worried. Does someone know what do do?
They already took blood tests and the results were normal.

You said he is getting medication for his seizures. Is it phenobarbital? If so, your vet may need to adjust the dossage or prescribe something besides the valium to control the,. I have had two dogs that had seizures, so I know how upsetting it can be. If your vet can't find something to control the seizures, he needs to consult with another vet and find a different solution. Sometimes seizures are very hard to control. I wish you so much luck with this. As I said, I know how difficult it is to watch them seize.

Have you tried Phenobarbital as a control medication?
Usually this is what is used for the controlling of seizures. And then every 2-3 weeks you have to get them tested again. The valium should only be used for EMERGENCIES, not as a daily medication.

I would see a neurologist if I were you...It may cost alot but its totally worth it rather than spending hundreds at a regular vet. Its like me going to a regular doctor for a brain tumor when I should be seeing a neurologist.

When your dog has a seizure...The body temperature will rise very quickly. Keep a thermometer handy so after the serizure has slowed, take his temp (rectally) and if its above 102.5 I would consider using any means possible to keep the dog cool. The warmer the body, the more chance for brain damage. Try and hold your dogs mouth shut or use a stick to keep in their mouth to prevent them from biting thier tongue. If you hold their mouth shut, they can still breath...dont worry.

Good luck with this....

my golden retriever has seizures. she has grand malls she will flip and flop every where
she takes 2 pills a day.

you just need to be gental with him. when he does have a seizure you need to hold him and pet him and tell him he is a good boy, you can do it, lets go come on, i love you, pet them and stroke thier head. flip his ears out ward so they can air out. never miss a dose
always keep him calm. over time he shouldnt have so many if not they need to up his pheno.

good luck

need anything ealse just email me! =)

Your vet may have to change up the combination of medications. If he is on only phenobarbital have your vet look into adding potassium bromide as a secondary medication. The Pheno/PB seems to work well in controlling advancing seizures.
