Epilepsy and memory loss? |
My sister is epileptic, and she suffers with memory loss. It is a known side effect, and she's coping with it, but I think it's something which really gets her down. She was diagnosed just over a year ago, her seizures started one night with no prior symptoms. She has been on medication for about 8 months, and the correct dosage for her was found about 5 months ago. Sometimes it lessens but sometimes not and even though it is extremly frustrating it does get easier to cope with it. It could also be down to the medication the first one I was given was the worst and my memory was terrible but after I got my meds sorted it did get a lot better. Try and discuss it with your GP or specialist and see if they can suggest a different medication and perhaps try to learn some memory boosting techniques. At the end of the day epilepsy affects everyone differently, also the people who matter will understand and those that don't are not worth worrying about. I hope that helps a little. It is frustrating but you do learn to live with it - I even joke that I don鈥檛 need wallpaper because of the post it notes (if only I could remember where I put them). With no memory, the secret to coping with it is to be very well organised. Remember there is an upside to memory loss -every time I watch film it's like the first time. I have a bit of short term memory loss at times. It's hard because everyone doesn't understand it's a side effect. They think I'm trying to blame it on something when I explain the reason. |
