Epilepsy in dogs causes?

What are the causes of epilepsy in dogs??

POOR BREEDING PRACTICES!!!!!

byb/puppymills knowingly breed dogs with epilepsy and it proliferates...

Epilepsy is a disease that is characterized by seizures.

Seizures are caused by a variety of things.
Epilepsy and other neurological disorders and issues
Poisoning and toxic substances to dog
Idiopathic - no real cause
Secondary symptom of another problem such as diabetes.
ETA: And yes as Aussie pointed out - poor genetics. Dogs who actually have epilepsy are more likely to have offspring who have epilepsy as well.

3 main reasons:
1. Ate something toxic which hurts the nervous system (including the brain)
2. Head injury (hurts the brain)
3. There really is no reason. The brain cells just aren't firing right.

Phenobarbital is usually one of the first drugs of choice with dogs and epilepsy.

I agree with AUSSIEMO. poor breeding is a big huge cause. They are finding out it is sometimes a delayed reaction to immunizations. Read this, keep in mind these are Vets talking.

Generally speaking epilepsy is an idiopathic disease that simply means that no one really knows what causes it. It can sometimes be due to head trauma but usually they are born with it.

No one really knows but it can be managed quite well with medication.
