Parents/Caregivers/Teachers that have children with Epilepsy?

My daughter is going to be in Kindergarten this Fall and I was wondering if anyone else that has children that are taking seizure meds could tell me if they affect the way they learn, remember, etc. She is taking Keppra.

Keppra is a mild drug in comparison to other epileptic drugs, has few side effects. I know I have been on it for around 6 years now. Although I am an adult, it has caused me no problems in learning new things, remembering or any of that.
Good luck in School little one!

Hi.
All anti-epileptic medication comes with a price. More often the price is that it makes the child sluggish and tired, which is not conducive to attention or learning. They can consequently have an impact of the 'speed of processing' information, which has obvious implications for memory and learning.

The trick is finding a doctor who is good enough to strike the right balance between controlling the seizures and sedating the child.

I had a student last year that was on some meds and was totally zoned out and still had seizures. He actually had to wear a helmet.
This year he has been put on Keppra and there is a total turn around. He doesn't wear a helmet and he is alert and oriented..its like a totally different kid.
