How can we help a person who gets epilepsy?

How can we help a person who gets epilepsy?

There are several ways. My dad has epilepsy. When he has a fit, we always give him a cushion; or generally make sure he cannot hurt himself in anyway. We do not attempt to move him because apparently this could make the situation worse. Make sure he takes his medication; if their fits are becoming more and more common, ring the doctor back up for some more checks.
My dad had a few fits; went to the doctor, had a brain scan; got the all clear and was given some medication. A few years later, he had another fit, he was taken to the doctor and he was given double the dose of his medication; I'm saying that the person can become immune so double check they take their medication and the correct amount.

Good luck; hope this helps.

I am not sure what you mean by your question. Do you mean how do you help someone while they are having a seizure? In that case, you can only make sure that they do not injure themselves. It is OK to offer restraint so they don't fall off a chair, or fall out of bed, etc.

Other than that, there are tons of websites that offer answers to all the ususal questions... can I have children? Can I drive? ETC.

The best thing to do is educate yourself. Technically the disease is no longer called Epilepsy, it is called Seizure Disorder. The episodes suffered are not 'fits' but are seizures. You can pinpoint the type you have and you may even discover your triggers, so you can reduce the chance of a seizure.

Do what Sandra posted. Also I would ask the person what they want you to do. Assure them it's nothing to be ashamed of and that you just want to do the right thing. You just want to help. If this is a child, ask a doctor.

Do NOT DO NOT DO NOT put anything in there mouth or hold them down. Just move dangerous objects away from them. And don't call the ambulance unless it lasts for more the 3 minutes. I'm sure they get tired of the medical bills from people calling 911 for them.
