Is it epilepsy? How can we stop the blank spells?

My 10-year old started having blank spells since she stopped having febrile seizures 3 years ago. Her EEG results was normal. The neurosurgeon said there was nothing wrong with her reflexes. She is quite intelligent and it is sad that she is being teased by her classmates.

Though you did not state how often she has these "blank" spells or how she acts after them, such as does she feel very tired, want to sleep, etc. or does she just sort of wake up normally, nor did you indicate whether or not she kind of "jumps" out of these episodes or comes out of it slowly, I certainly believe that she could be having peit mal seizures as well. Get a referral to a pediatric neurologist and see if they can follow her with a long-term EEG in as normal a setting as possible. If that cannot be done or does not result in a seizure being recorded, take a video camera and try to film her as she enters into one or more of the spells, then film her as she goes through it and them comes out of it. Ask her simple questions during the different phases of the event to which you know she knows the answers to try to test her cognitive levels. Also try to record eye movements or any other movements of her body and make a record at the start of the video as to the date, day of the week and time that the video started and stopped. All of that information may be useful. Good luck with her. I believe that her condition may be able to be treated with medication or it may resolve by itself eventually.

Try a pediatric neurologist instead of a neurosurgeon. They may be petit mal seizures that can be controlled with medication.

The EEG will be normal between seizures, and you can't always catch a seizure when you want to.

it could before ADD and her attention just lags
