Estrogen bc pills vs. non-estrogen bc pills?

This may be kind of detailed but here we go. I'm 38 years old and I've been on orthocyclen (estrogen based) bc pills for 15 years +. I just quit taking the pill all together. Recently, I had what is called an ocular migraine where I saw flashes of zig zag lights. My obgyn called me and told me that I should look into a non estrogen pills because of blood clots happening from estrogen based pills. She is being cautious b/c the ocular migraine. I'm looking into changing from orthocylen to a non estrogen form such as IUD's or progestin pill, but am nervous because I've been on orthocyclen for so long with no side effects. I have a history of breast cancer in my family and irregular menstrual cycles. I also don't want to get pregnant. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what route I should take here. Is it safe for me to continue orthocylen with all the risks (blood clots, etc.) . Should I moved to another type of pill or IUD's. It's so complicated and I want to be safe. Help!

Because of the risks of the ocular migraine I would recommend going on to another kind of birth control pill without the estrogen such as Micronor (this medication has progesterone in it only).

However, I would recommend discussing your concerns with your OB/GYN about the issue of going off the OrthoCyclen even though you deal with these ocular headaches.
