my mom has fibroid tumors and she has severe menstrual cramps, bloating and very very heavy bleeding during her cycle.

Most fibroids are "silent", without symptoms. Some cause excessive bleeding during periods and sometimes in between. They don't swell up and go down, because they are a benign tumor of the muscle of the uterus. Sometimes they are only single or a few, sometimes they are diffuse, and they can come in all sizes.

The best way to get diagnosed would be to have an ultrasound of the pelvis, to check out the uterus and ovaries.

Due to excessive bleeding, I went to my doctor and he did an ultrasound, and I have diffuse small fibroids throughout my uterus. The overall effect is to cause the uterus to be enlarged (he said 13 cm in length - say, grapefruit size - pretty big). He gave me a shot to help stop my bleeding, and wants me to have another 2, then will assess for a hysterectomy. I'm 52, I can't be on Depo-Provera long-term. It's too big to do vaginally, will have to have an abdominal surgery. :( Well, it will definitively solve the problem.
