I am interested in getting an IUD again but am worried if it will have an effect on my fibroids?

I had an IUD and it worked great. I was not the nicest girl on it though. I had it taken out b/c it was effecting my White blood cell count. Well since then my doctor has diagnosed me with fibroids and said that I would have to have my uterus removed within the next 5 yrs. No big rush but sooner is better than later. Well...I'm considering getting an IUD but will if effect the fibroids? I can't have the hysterectomy yet b/c I can't take off work for the time that it will require.

Nice link Dr. Doly....very informative but I had a plastic IUD...Merina? Although I wouldn't be suprised if it had something to do with the fibroids.

If done Laproscopically, you convalescence from work will be in terms of days. However, if done by general incision, your rehabilitation could be up to 6 weeks. I suggest you find out more on the hysterectomy, and see if it could be scheduled in such a fashion to minimize your time away from your job.

IUD+fibroids could be a reason for uterine bleeding - see below

Have to say the last answer differs from my experience! I had an IUD fitted to relieve the symptoms of fibroids, and it was a nightmare (myrena coil I think it was called) My symptoms were far worse than before, then because of the density of the fibroids the coil 'got lost', then fell out!!!

In comparison, my experience, having just had a hysterectomy was much better. I had a 'key-hole' procedure, however, I would say that I have only just returned to work after 14 weeks, so I would question the previous responder.

I would recommend the operation regardless of procedure used, and the required time away from work for two reasons.
1. If you are suffering as a result of the fibroids and need to 'get your life back.
2. Your work is probably being effected as a result of your problems, and in any case, your health is far more important.

I am now a long way into recovery and have never felt better.
