Fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by fatigue, widespread pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, and multiple tender points, has unknown specific cause, but doctors believe a number of factors may contribute. These factors may include: chemical changes in the brain that can cause alterations in the regulation of certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, serotonin which is linked to depression, migraines and gastrointestinal distress and substance P, a brain chemical associated with pain, stress and anxiety, as well as depression. Some researchers theorize that sleep disturbances may be a cause rather than just a symptom of fibromyalgia. An injury or trauma, particularly in the upper spinal region, may trigger the development of fibromyalgia in some people. An injury may affect your central nervous system, which may trigger fibromyalgia. Some researchers believe that a viral or bacterial infection may trigger fibromyalgia. Other triggers would be the abnormalities of the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system, changes in muscle metabolism like for example the deconditioning and decreased blood flow that may contribute to decreased strength and fatigue. Psychological stress and hormonal changes also may be possible causes of fibromyalgia.

Thanx Clark for the info on fms which is good BUT checked your site & disagree on what you're selling!! As yet, there's no cure for fibro, maybe someday Report It

the first question is hell yeah after that idk:D just that what im finding is working ...is kinda complicated and i dont have fibro just cfs so if you really want more mail me or im i dont care and with the meds i read you i havent got like 10 different ones to work!

best of luck

the other good possibility os Tramadol (SSRI pain med)

I find ice helps me as well as bracing and positioning

I was also the first person to get the vagus nerve stimulator and i feel about 25% better. It's like apacemaker for teh brain-

it's not widely available yet

Have you tried chiropractic adjustments? They seemed to help me, along with massage therapy. I haven't ever found relief from any medications I've tried, and I was diagnosed with fibro 7 years ago. Keeping my stress level in check & regular low impact exercise helps with the fatigue. Hope this helps!

Give yourself permission to rest when you need to, play when you want, and do it all without guilt.

Also, try not to talk about it with certain friends and family. This gives you the ability to escape the pain, fatigue and frustration and have a life where you can forget for alittle while. Finding a good support group is also important as this is where youd most likely get the understanding and nurturing that you need.

Best of Luck, feel free to email me.

I have both. Most of the time the fibro is easier to handle that the CFIDS for me. The SSRIs are supposed to help with the fibro & there have been some studies to show that they help with the fatigue also. They didn't help me. Some ppl have had some good results with Provigil & other cerebral stimulants with CFIDS. I have other diagnoses & allergies that prevent me from taking these & other meds. The only things that I have found other than Lyrica that has helped me are muscle relaxers & a folate that crosses the blood brain barrier. After trying many meds & having multiple side effects, I am now taking as few meds as possible. I try to eat as healthy as possible & take supplements. The most important thing to remember is that all treatment is individualized & what works for me, may or may not work for you. Anything you learn for me or anyone else should be used only as a starting point for discussions on treatment plans with your dr. Good luck

I have both. Mine started in June 1982. See my site http://www.fms-help.com - you will find lots of helpful articles and ideas there.

I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia for 7 years. I haven't tried Lyrica, but I really don't want to take it. I've tried a lot of meds. They all helped to some degree, but I take medication for asthma and allergies as well and I want to minimize the meds as much as possible.

I've found a combination of treatments to be most effective rather than any one single treatment. I have been using a combination of medication, herbal and dietary supplements, myofascial release therapy (a type of massage), regular chiropractic care, light exercise and hot baths (in epsom salts - about 2 cups in a warm to hot bath). All of these things have helped me cope.

I find that the newletter from the Fibromyalgia Network is helpful for staying current on research and treatment options. Membership in the Fibromyalgia Network is $28 per year and includes a subscription to the quarterly newletter. Plus, you can order back issues of the newletters, so if you check out their list of past issues and see something interesting, you can order a copy for a relatively nominal fee OR you can order multiple back issues for a discount. The link for their site is included below. In addition the newsletter, the website has lots of helpful information. There is a list of common treatments (follow the Basic Info link on the left side of the page) as well as a list of helpful dietary supplements (Go to the Resources link and select Consumer Alerts). Maybe you'll find something helpful in there that you haven't tried already.

Speaking of dietary supplements, if you haven't checked out the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis A. Balch, give it a look. It has a section about supplements that might be helpful for people with Fibromyalgia. The book is listed at Amazon.com. Also see the site endfatigue.com. The treatment protocol lists a number of medications and supplements that may be helpful to you. In addition, this doctor sells some supplements he created that are designed specifically for people with fibro and cfids. I've tried one of the supplement for sleep. I'm including a direct link to the treatment protocol below.

Finally, I have found myofascial release therapy to be very helpful in dealing with my muscle tension and pain. This website has some good basic information about myofascial release: http://www.myofascial-release.com/

A couple other more off the wall suggestions: If you haven't had your thyroid checked, that's something you might want to try. It's helped me quite a bit. If you want more information on this one, send me an email. I'll send you more detailed information. Also, if you haven't been to a Naturopathic doctor, I would highly recommend this from recent personal experience. I'm now being treated for adrenal insufficiency and I'm starting to have a lot more energy and a lot less pain. If you'd like more information, please email me.

I hope this is helpful!

I would like to suggest DRibose. Please go to my blog and read all the things I have found that have helped me to reduce my pain levels.(Post called"what helps me") DRibose helps so many people that I suggest it to anyone who has fibro or cfs or even sleep problems.

My mother has fibromyalgia and I am afraid that at 18 I do also. My mom is taking humira and it helps her. Hope that helps
