a long time ago it was believed that Fibromyalgia (FMS) was a musculoskeletal/arthritslike condition-so Rheumatologist were the specialist taht claimed it.

In teh last 10 years it has been believed thjat it is a disorder of the central nervous system.

Not all rheumatologist are competant to deal with FMS-

many docs in all specialities still use it as a waste basket diagnosis for anyone who is tired and in pain-eevn if its due to their lifestyle.

fibrobetsy's list is based on recomendations form patients-she takes off the docs with bad reviews

other referral lists take any doc taht wants to be on it- even if 1 person recommends him and 99 say he is horrible.

the only 'test' for FMS is a tnderpoint exam-if you have symptoms of FMS and have about 11 out of 18 tenderpoints-you may be diagnosed with FMS

befopre that-other conditins with similar sypmptoms ned to be ruled out-such as MS and Lymes

other criteria include painin all 4 quadrants of teh body for at least 3 months

other symptoms include fatigue, stiffness, numbness, cognitive issues, sleep difficultities....

Depending on where the pain is at.. a pain management doctor. Some neurologist treat fibromyalgia as well, here in Jacksonville Florida, I know 2 podiatrist that are treating fibromyalgia as well. However for testing I would see a Neurologist they usually do a NCS and an EMG. These two test check muscle and nerves. They may even do an MRI or a CT of the brain. Good luck with everything!

A general practitioner, a family doctor, a rheumatologist, a pain management specialist, etc., etc. ......

Any of these medical doctors can diagnose the non-inflammatory pain condition simply by asking you questions on a routine health history. Detail all your symptoms @ this time, including onset & what you've tried to relieve your symptoms.

Some doctors will want to touch you to determine if you have certain trigger points, but that has more to do with myofascia pain than fibromyalgia.

There's medical literature on each of these distinct pain conditions (ask Ask, google, etc!). There's only one FDA approved pharmaceutical for fibromyalgia at this time---it's Lyrica which is made by Pfizer.

Best of luck. For your sake, I truly hope & pray you have a condition other than fibromyalgia!

You have been to countless doctors and specialists, your medical insurance has been through quite a workout, and you still don鈥檛 have the answers you need. All you know are you seemed to live life with constant stomach bloating, loss of concentration skills, and chronic fatigue. That doesn鈥檛 even begin to describe the life altering pain you experience just about everyday. At this point most of your friends, family, and health care professionals are treating you like you might be crazy because all of the medical tests have come out with good results. It鈥檚 time to find one of the fibromyalgia doctors and see if they can help you.

Fibromyalgia is an often misunderstood disorder that can cause an enormous amount of horrible symptoms, including chronic pain mainly in the back of the head, the upper back and chest, as well as the neck and shoulders. This pain can also manifest in the face and create chronic headaches. The joints of the body aren鈥檛 immune to the pain either. Most often it is found in the hips, knees, and elbows of the body. The pain of fibromyalgia can last from a few weeks to a few months. It鈥檚 pretty clear to see why fibromyalgia treatment is so important.
