Fibromyalgia question...?

Hi all, I'm 17 and my mom has been researching online for awhile now to find out what is wrong with me. I've been to the doctor numerous times but we can never seem to find out what is wrong. I have really sore muscles in my back on both sides, trouble sleeping, anxiety and I always seem to be very stressed out. Tonight, my mom was trying to find something for my back pain and she stumbled upon a website explaining fibromyalgia.

My question is, can someone as young as 17 have this condition? And I don't totally understand it. It says it kind of ties in all of these different symptoms but is it a muscle condition or what? I'm just really confused. It talks about treatment with muscle relaxers and anti-depressants and therapy. Anybody have fibromyalgia and want to help explain it to me? Thanks so much!

I don't understand how therapy and anti-depressants can help my muscles?

I have had symptoms of Fibromyalgia since I was 5. there are many teens/preteens diagnosed with it.

Fibromyalgia is believed to be a disorder of the Central Nervous System. Muscle pain is only a SYMPTOM. The actual SYNDROME is neurological in nature. There is a difference between nervous system based pain and musculoskeletal pain. That is why drugs such as antidepressants and anti seizure meds help. They help regulate the neurological system. Narcotic pain meds generally work on the muscles themselves.

The main symptoms are widespread pain, fatigue, stiffness, numbness, cognitive difficulties, sleep difficulties

Fibromyalgia is generally 'wide spread' it involves all 4 quadrants of your body-upper lower front back. technically back pain alone wouldn't qualify.

Anxiety and Depression can cause the pain/sleep problems you describe as there are physical componants to those conditions.

To be screened for Fibromyalgia-you need to go to a COMPETANT doctor-Most Rheumatologists will say they deal with Fibromaylgia-bu vey few are actually competant.

Over 10 years ago it was wrongly believed to be an actual Musculoskeletal syndrome-current research (and my own research and experience) is that it is a neurological condition. The only FDA drug specifically approved for Fibromyalgia is the Neuro drug Lyrica

If it was as simple as a Fungal Infection-it woudl be well known-it is a minimally accepted theory. It is possible to have Fibro like symptoms when you have a fungal infection-but it is not true Fibromyalgia

Muscle relaxants didn't help me-and had severe side effects-as tehy do not act on the neuro system

Therapy for stress management may help as Stress makes teh symptoms worse

Hallmarks of Fibromyalgia are lack of inflammtion/swelling

you need to go see Rheumatologist to be diagnosed that will at least get you to know whats wrong with you. that way they can rule out anything else .I had it done they take a few viles of blood to see if you have Rheumatoid Arthritis .They ask questions and see what parts hurt you .Im sorry for your pain at your age all you should have to think about is grades and friends and maybe a bfriend but this is a good place to start

I have friends that have it. I cannot really explain it to you, although I have included a link. Good luck.

Yes. I'm 14 and I have fibromyalgia. When you're under 21 it's just called childhood fibromyaligia. it's kind of complicated but here you go. It's mostly a muscle condition. Anti- depressents and therapy are the most common treatments. I think that they help the most. Also do understand that there is no known cure. Also I would go see a doctor first to make sure it isn't something else. (BTW alot of doctors don't know what this is so pick a doctor wisely, I didn't get diagnosed until 4 years after I initally got it)
Best of luck!

Yes you can have it at 17. I'm 26 and have had it since i got a concussion when i was 20.
Next time you go to your doctor explain to them that you think you might have fibro, bring some information with you as alot of doctors dont know much about it/how to treat it. They will probably send you to a rhumatologist who usually will be the one to diagnose you.
I am presently taking lyrica plus a few herbal supplements for my migraines and ibs. lyrica works pretty well for me but I really try to only take it if I am having a particuarly bad spell.
My doctor did put me on antidrepressants for awhile, I was on the generic for prozac and it was horrible for me i couldn't eat and wanted to throw up all the time. I've heard it has helped for some people but it was no good for me. I was also on cymbalta for awhile which didn't help too much either. Basically different meds help different people and if you have fibro you will definitly have to work to find something that works for you, or if you want to take anything at all.
if you have any questions about fibro i would be happy to help you feel free to email me if you'd like!:)

There is no doubt that living with a chronic illness isn鈥檛 one of life鈥檚 most exciting joys. As a matter of fact, it can be one of the most trying experiences of a person鈥檚 life. Take that frustration and compound it by about a million and you have something close to the problems a person with fibromyalgia is forced to deal with day in and day out. This little understood disorder is difficult to diagnose, often misunderstood by the patient鈥檚 family and friends, and incredibly painful on top of all that. Each patient is different, but the understanding the basics of this disease is vital in providing support to affected people.

You can definitely have fibro at 17. I was about 18 or 19 when I developed it. It's not entirely a muscle condition, it affects muscles, joints & bones so it's a mixed bag. Depression is a very common symptom of fibro due to the chronic pain so the anti-depressants wont actually help the pain directly but the indirect benefit is you wont notice the pain as much. It is believed to be a fungus infection. Usually the sore muscles are in and around the shoulder area.
Doctors may not agree but they apparently haven't heal ed yo so let me give you some help. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Lets treat this as afungle infection so Get and take ; Oil of oregano, Olive leaf extract, garlic capsules and cinnamon all from a health store. The most strongest fungicide is Oreganol P73 . get this also or go on line and find these items. These items are natural and shouldn't have any side effects. But they just might help you. Good Luck and God Bless.
