Is Fibromyalgia classed as a disability?

I have recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after years of pain and discomfort and tooing and froing to the Drs. I am finding it increasenly difficult to do day to day activities including my job would anyone have any advice on claiming DLA.

I know how painful and disabling Fibromyalgia can be. In the United States, it is considered a disability; and if bad enough, one can get Social Security Disability. I am not familiar with how the UK determines whether or not you can get DLA with fibromyalgia, but hopefully the below links and information will be helpful to you! Since you have been to a lot of doctors and have evidence that your Fibromyalgia is making your day to day activities difficult, it surely wouldn't hurt you to apply for DLA and send them all of your medical records. Good luck!

It would be worth you phoning your local Job Centre and asking to speak to a disability employment adviser. It's their job to know about benefits and things.

It's also been said, but I second visiting your local CAB as they have people working with them who specialise in Benefits and sometimes Benefits for people with Disabilities.

Don't listen to the person who said don't bother - do! The DLA form is bad, it's very long winded and was written when the main people it would apply to only had physical disabilities and would need constant support. I now know people who have hidden disabilities like Autism get it and so if Fibromyalgia is affecting your every day life then it is worth going for it. I do know people that sometimes you have to apply a couple of times - and when you fill out the form you have to think about how you feel on your worst days.

Good luck with it!

Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis, not a disability. the impairments that result from having fibromyalgia, e.g. reduced stamina, strength or range of motion, constitute a disability. Not everyone with fibromyalgia experiences the same impairments.

The definition of "disability" varies depending on the context in which it's being applied. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a disability as "...a physical or mental impairment that signficantly impacts one or more life areas..." e.g. work, transporation, independent living, etc.

Whether you're seeking reasonable accommodations to allow you to continue working within your limits, or medical/financial benefits, the key issue is the nature and extent to which your impairments impact your ability to live and work independently. For example, blindness might not make a person completely disabled as a musician (e.g. Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder), but it would make them completely disabled as a truck driver or pilot.

it is possibhle to claim DLA for Fibromyalgia, as this is what my mum has had to do. as she is now so ill with it she can't even walk down the stairs, let alone work.but ask the local CAB to help you as the social will more than likely disregard it. the CAB will word the forms to help you get a fair hearing. good luck!!! and don't give up!!!!!
P.S. i can't see why you can't get DLA when they soon give it to smack heads!!!

I know a couple of people with that problem. Unfortunately they have to tough it out the best they can and it really makes working hard, because employers really don't get it.

In the US-it is a disability-but that doesn't necessarily mean you are qualified to receive disability benefits-

I don't-I work full time-but am eleigible for some related services such as vocational rehab.

Unless you have lost a limb or you are classed as mentally unstable or need 24/7 care they won't even look at your case.

Aunt works for DLA head office in Blackpool.

you may be able to claim dla it just all depends on how your illness affects you on a daily basis, you can allways apply.
