Fibromyalgia: Should I go on Social Security? |
I am 19 yrs old and have Fibromyalgia. I have had it for the last seven years, and yes, I have actually been diagnosed. I looked into getting on disability just so I could afford treatment, but they said I would have to quit school and couldnt work at all. I dont want to live like that. I was told by my doctor that I should stop trying to work, and just go on disability because I would never be able to hold a steady job. Although I really don't want to be on disability, I think it may be the only way聽because I have had to quit from five jobs in the last year for FMS. Some days are good and some are not so good. I never know and it creates a lot of problems. I keep making big plans to go to work and school and have a life, but I know I am just fooling myself because I am a risk as it is. I want to go to school and work and get away from my mom. I had to move back in with her and my dad after I lost my last job. She reminds me every day of my issue and she's not nice. She says she cant trust me because I have memory problems and I am not consistent physically. Anyway, I am looking for some advice on what to do here. Thanks for any help. Be aware that is is very hard to get approved for disability-most people say it takes 2-3 years. It is very hard to get SSI because most people do not believe in Fibromyalgia as a disorder. Call and ask to have information phamplets sent to you. You can also go on line and read choices to apply for. It is a long process but getting Dr papers is big help. Also there are programs when on disbility called "ticket to work" to help you with work and training and still get benefits. Its a shame you dont have more family support. BUT just get on this and show her what is able to get done. Let me know how it goes. I have diabled son since birth and I am now on Soc Sec disbility for osteoartis *mamatx I am a Social Security disability attorney and I have represented many fibromyalgia SSDI claimants. Be aware that most fibro cases will end up at a hearing because there is no "listing" for fibromyalgia and the very nature of fibromyalgia cases (subjective symptom reporting) will dissuade administrative personnel at SSA from approving these cases at the initial or recon appeal level. |
