I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and I am having a really bad day.?

Can someone please give me ideas on how to feel better today? Thank you.

Try and meditate, thinking about a specific part of your body, and say to it "relax" or "I have no pain" or just really focus on relaxing that part of your body. Then, move to another area. The mind is very powerful! I hope you feel better soon :-)

ibuprophen and a nap. seriously though, try stretching, for me I start slow, and do little stretches and hold them for a long time, then do the same streatches again, you will notice you can go further each time. Also, while you are doing one streatch (for example, calf streatch) think about extending other muscles (shrug your shoulders and stretch your traps at the same time, maximize your time streatching) While you are streatching count your breaths so that in your mind you hear the number, and think about the blood flowing thru every part of your body (ex: try to vizualize the path your blood takes from one part of your body to the next) this helps clear your mind. That always helps me. I hope it helps you.

There is no doubt that living with a chronic illness isn鈥檛 one of life鈥檚 most exciting joys. As a matter of fact, it can be one of the most trying experiences of a person鈥檚 life. Take that frustration and compound it by about a million and you have something close to the problems a person with fibromyalgia is forced to deal with day in and day out. This little understood disorder is difficult to diagnose, often misunderstood by the patient鈥檚 family and friends, and incredibly painful on top of all that. Each patient is different, but the understanding the basics of this disease is vital in providing support to affected people.

* Fibromyalgia symptoms
* Causes of the disease
* Long term prognosis

One of the most difficult parts of trying to diagnosis fibromyalgia a doctor has to face is the wide variety of symptoms associated with the disorder. There is no one set test to be performed that will give the health care professional a definitive answer. It becomes a trial and error exercise that often leaves the patient and doctor very frustrated. The general description of the symptoms of fibromyalgia includes chronic fatigue, irregular sleep patterns, and pain all over the body. For each patient, the symptoms also vary in severity making the disease even harder to pinpoint.

It would be much simpler to treat and possibly cure fibromyalgia if doctors know exactly what causes it. As it is, they only have possible theories to work with. Some experts believe it may be a pain sensitivity in the brain that causes the brain to 鈥渙ver react鈥?to stimulus of any kind. There are also theories that support the idea that fibromyalgia is the result of an infection or illness. In a nutshell, the medical jury is certainly still out on the causes of the fibromyalgia syndrome.

While it seems like there is only bad news in regards to fibromyalgia, at least patients can be comforted by the fact that the disease does not progress and isn鈥檛 fatal. Everyday more research is done to find more effective ways to relieve pain and correct the sleep and chronic fatigue problems associated with this disorder. By working closely with their doctor, fibromyalgia patients can often find a treatment plan that is effective with this disease. With patience and understanding the life of a fibromyalgia patient can be comfortable and normal. In the meantime, hard work is being done to understand it everyday.

I'm sorry! that must really suck. i didn't know what it was so i googled it and it sounds terrible. i guess that doesn't help. but the website does say massages and acupuncture help! http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromy...
call one of your friends(the nice, sympathetic ones you can talk to) and go for an ice cream. chocolate chip cookie dough always cheers me up! Or go for a walk in a park and talk about the things on your mind; your diagnosis and other stuff. Or listen to your favorite songs and sing along--I'm getting pretty good at green day's American idiot, lol. Watching TV is a good distraction. sometimes movies are too long and complicated to follow if you're in pain. Friends and Scrubs are my favorite comedy shows. so curl up on ur couch with your favorite food and watch TV for a while. Or answer Yahoo questions! jk:) some people like to sleep and when I'm sick i do, but otherwise i don't really like sleeping. that may sound weird, but i usually read really late at night. some good authors for a pretty shallow, easy read, which is usually what I'm looking for are john grisham, James Patterson, Agatha Christie! and dean Koontz. you might like Koontz's Odd Thomas series: I did. good luck and I'll be hoping you feel better today:)

Read my 100 Tips for Coping with Fibromyalgia at http://www.fms-help.com/tips.htm I've had FMS since 1982 http://www.fms-help.com/fibro.htm You can also find more helps on my homepage at http://www.fms-help.com

What works for some people doesn't always work for someone else, but stretching followed by a short walk sometimes helps a little.

Try a little light yoga stretches and just relax with some nice warm herbal tea.....laying in bed with some tea and my kitties is what works best for me.

I am so sorry about your diagnosis. I am sure you feel the same as we all have, glad to finally have a name for it, but now worried about what this means and where to go from here.
Well, I have known what disease I have had for about 7 years now. The more I have learned about the disease, I find I have had it most of my life. There are going to be bad days and there are going to be terrible days, then you will have good days. My advice is to please, try not to overdo it on those good days, that leads directly to a terrible day. Stress is one of our worst enemies and it can exacerbate our condition greatly. Life is of course full of stress, but we must try and alleviate it as much as possible.
All of that to say, there is no magical formula to make us feel better. The best they can do for us right now is to treat our symptoms. But to optimize our resources, the best advice I can give is to try and get regular sleep, eat nutritious food, wear soft and loose fitting clothing and comfortable shoes, and exercise as much as possible. I have tried Palates and have found that easier to do than most exercise regimes and the stretching helps greatly, but swimming would be optimal if you have the facilities. The water buoyancy helps alleviate the strain on our joints and muscles and makes stretching and exercising much easier.
I also would like to recommend a book to you that I have found most helpful. It is called "Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual", by Dr. Devin Starlanyl. She is not only a medical doctor, but also a Fibromyalgia patient. Her book has been so invaluable to me; I call it my Fibro-Bible. It was available through my local library, but I used it so much, I had to go ahead a purchase a copy. I found a used one on Amazon which was in excellent condition and very reasonably priced.
Finally, I have included below a couple of websites that I have found to be invaluable. The first one is Dr. Starlanyl's site and of course, I highly recommend bookmarking that one for future use. I hope I have been of some help to you. Please feel free to e-mail or IM me if you want to talk about things. I try to keep a Network of Fibromites going, so we can lend support and encouragement to each other. Gentle Hugs and Healing thoughts to you ~ Mayr
