My mother has fibromyalgia.?

My mother was diagnosed some time ago with fibromyalgia. Her dad died in 1971 and had RA in almost every joint, lost a leg and an eye due to being diabetic. He was in a wheel chair for 20 years before his death. Her mom died almost two years ago and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Do you think her dad had it also? When did they first start diagnosing this disease-year?

Lisa C: Thank you for the input. Everyone has been great. The specialist did tell her however that Fibro means that she has a poor immune system.
Everyone: Thank You, I just feel helpless. Will my sister and I get this also. We are multihandicapped already with vision and hearing. I also have mild parkinsons. I would hate to add this to the list.

Fibro is a neuro condition---it MAY affect the immune system--making it over or under reactive---
it is not autoimmune--but rather immune dysfunction

FIBROFIX is QUACKERY--that person did not have real fibro--she had a similar condition caused by a diet sensativity--NOT EVERYONE WITH WIDESPREAD PAIN has fibro--she is selling false hope

while fibro does run in families--its not genetic like come diseases like muscular dystrophy or cystic fibrosis

there is an increased risk in fmailies-but others don't necessarily get it--its like otehr disease like heart disease that tend to run infmailies

I'm sorry you mother is suffering with fibromyalgia. The diagnosis has been around for a long time really, but the characteristics and the name have been a bit different over time. I believe it was in the early 1990s when the American Board of Rhematology last changed the diagnostic criteria.

Now in terms of your grandparents and your mom...Your grandfather suffered from both rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes - 2 horrible things to deal with, and your grandmother also had fibromyalgia...It is possible, coincidentally, that your grandfather had fibromyalgia, but there is no way to be certain. The condition of fibromyalgia has been suggested to be possibly genetic. The other thing is, lots of symtoms overlap. One thing for certain is fibromyalgia is not life threatening, nor is an immune system problem as RA is and many docs would say diabetes is. Fibromyalgia is a nervous system disorder.
