Are there any treatments for Fibromyalgia?

Are there any treatments for Fibromyalgia?

Hi, I work in Rheumatology and we see approximately 10-20 Fibro patients daily. Fibro is (in a way), a tough diagnosis to make (and treat) since there is no Xray or blood test that can confirm or deny that you have it. And due to this, it can be a hit or miss when it comes to treating it.

Most patients that we see often have a depressed mood to go along with their non-specific pains, so sometimes by treating the mood, we can also provide pain relief. And vice versa, if the pain is relieved, the patient's mood improves. I know that some patients use a drug called Cymbalta, others have used one called Lyrica. (those are both relatively newer drug choices).

And sometimes, we prescribe pain meds like Vicodin or Darvocet. Again, you have to consider that Fibro is not a disease that has definite diagnostic boundaries, so treatment will vary according to the patient's needs. It's not like if you have high cholesterol, and the treatments are obvious. Sometimes our patients go through trial and error before they find something that makes their lives easier.

Above all else, the first concern should be to relieve the pain, and after that, hopefully the mood will improve, too.
Good luck to you, or for your loved one. I know from the people I see every day that it's a tough disease to live with, and my heart goes out to you. Source(s): I have worked in Rheumatology for 5 years and coordinated Clinical Trials for many diseases, including Fibromyalgia.
No real treatments, but preventative measures to limit painful flare ups and pain reduction strategies.

Web MD is a good source of information on this.
At this current time there is not a standard treatment other than the usual things you hear like swimming will help, try walking, ect... they are finding that cymbalta (an antidepresant) helps... a friend of mine went on it and it helped her. I tried it but I had an allergic reaction so I am unable to take it. There are new studies going on right now and they believe that they should have a treatment for it within a few years.... until then we just have to suffer. Well, I have to suffer since I only have one kidney, all pain meds are not an option for me other than tylenol and that doesn't help my headaches let alone my muscle pains!!!
Yes...there are many treatments for FMS. There is no cure, however.
FMS affects all patients differently and many of them respond differently to the treatments.
There are a number of considerations when treating FMS. A persons treatment will be directly related to what symptoms they're having. There is no one pill that will do the trick. It's much more difficult to manage than that.
Many patients will be placed on Tricyclic Antidepressants to assist with sleep patterns and chronic pain issues. The dosage is usually less than if treating depression.
Pain management is a huge part of keeping the FMS patient in play.
Some are able to be treated with over the counter pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol. Others may even be placed on strong opioid depending on the severity of their condition.
In any case, a hot bath, gentle massage, and keeping a stress free and balanced life will be of assistance.
Your question is SO broad that I could go on all day. If you have specific questions, try looking up Men Surviving FMS on the web.
Hope this is of some assistance!

There is no specific treatment for fibromyalgia, as it effects every person differently, and because they don't yet know what it is or how its trigered. I have had fibromyalgia for about 7 years. There are several kinds of pain medications that your doctor can prescribe, and you just have to use trial and error to find the one or combination of several that work for you. If you suffer from insomnia, there are sleeps aids. I have found a regime that works for me. The combination of drugs and change of lifestyle "controls" most of the symptoms. Good luck, I hope you find what works for you.
