I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. What happens next?

I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Is there anyone out there with this disease? How can I handle it and the pain that comes with it?

Drug therapy for fibromyalgia can relieve pain and improve sleep. Since inflammation is not a part of this syndrome, corticosteroids or high doses of NSAIDs are not prescribed. However, judicious use of NSAIDs or acetaminophen may provide pain relief during flares.

Abnormal sleep patterns typically are treated with low doses of tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline (Elavil and Endep), or nortriptyline (Aventyl and Pamelor). Antidepressant drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), are another option.

If people have severe pain in a specific area, injection of an anesthetic (usually procaine) can provide relief. Benefits are felt within two to five days and can last two to four months. However, injections can be given only every three months.

first of all become knowledgable about it. There are alot of books and and info on the computer. Second find a support group in your area. Know what works for one person might not work for you. Keep a journel of your aches and pain detail weather sleep pattern foods you eat...It might help to know the triggers..On good days take advantage of it..try to reduce stress level. Go at a pace where your at. Dont over do yourself. try medicines if doesnt work dont get frustrated try another. Flexing as much as you can does help to agree. Make sure the dr who is treating you understands about fibro-
