Does anyone out there have fibromyalgia? |
I have it, but don't know anyone else that does. I take medication everyday to help. Yes, I have it, as does my daughter. She's 16. She was diagnosed when she was 9, shortly after her father died. I was diagnosed about six years earlier. Some people seem to have a genetic tendency that makes them more likely to develop fibromyalgia if they are exposed to a lot of stress, either from an intense crisis or a long period of high stress levels. I'm certain that's the case for us. Katie has outgrown the worst of her symptoms, thankfully. She was homeschooled for five years, but has been able to return to school now (she's in 10th grade now). I pushed through things for years, 'til I wasn't able to do so anymore. I'm disabled now as a result, because things got much worse thanks to not taking care of it before now and other conditions which exacerbate the FMS. I take time-release morphine, tizanidine and modafanil daily, with instant-release morphine for breakthrough pain. More importantly, I've reduced all controllable stressors in my life to an absolute minimum so that I'm better able to cope with those that I cannot control. Our home environment is carefully controlled, as well, in order to be as healthy as possible. With those measures, Katie (my daughter) is able to be a fairly normal, happy teen. I'm not able to work, but I'm pretty happy and can attend school part-time and be a good mother to her and wife to my partner. Best of luck to you! My mother has fibromyalgia, which is coming under control now, with methotrexate treatment. Not long ago, though, she was nearly crippled with it, and almost could not dress in the mornings as her wrists and fingers were so weak. It was horrible to watch as the onset was very quick - two to three months. Check out the Arthritis Research Campaign website below for more information. This is a quote from there: "Fibromyalgia is a name for widespread pain affecting the muscles but not the joints. It will not cause permanent damage to tissues but the symptoms may last for months or years. There are no outward signs of the condition and people with fibromyalgia often look well but feel awful. Because of this, other people may not appreciate the pain and tiredness you are suffering and this can cause additional distress. Fibromyalgia is a common condition and is sometimes so severe that it affects your work and your personal and social life. In fibromyalgia the tendons and ligaments, or fibrous tissues (fibro-), and the muscles (-my-) are affected by pain (-algia) and tenderness. The pain may feel as though it affects the whole body." I hope it's some reassurance for you that you're not alone in having this condition, and I hope it improves for you. Best wishes. |
