Do you know any males with fibromyalgia? |
My son (15) was diagnosed at 9 1/2 yrs by a rheumatologist. All my research refers only to adult women. My son has no one to relate to other than to 2 aunts and my mother who was recently diagnosed. Twice we have met teenaged girls, usually in ER. We have searched for websites w/ no luck. I'm convinced that my father has FMS, though he would never admit it. My daughter and I both have it, and he won't take it seriously. There are fewer men who are identified as having FMS, and I personally believe that's because of societal conditioning more than anything else. Fewer men are willing to acknowledge chronic pain, so they do the "stiff upper lip" act and self-medicate if they must. I did find two web sites that you and your son might find to be of particular interest. One of them is on the National Fibromyalgia Association's site. I'm not sure if their magazine, FM Aware, has done a feature about men with fibromyalgia, but if you see it (I've found it at Barnes & Noble before) you might check it out to see. Good luck!
