Can the flu virus survive in water? |
If I drink directly from a bottle of water and there's the usual backwash, can the flu virus survive in the water bottle for an extended period of time? Well I suppose it's obvious that the flu virus can remain alive for at least a few minutes even in a drop of Saliva. So I suppose I'll rephrase the question. How long would the flu virus survive in some filtered water which is in a bottle? I know it cannot replicate, because it needs cells for that, but can it survive and infect again, after say, a day? Or a week? Or a month? As far as re-affecting you--NO! Your immune system will build antibodies to that particular strand of flu virus; so your chance of reinfection from the same strand is extremely unlikely. Could it effect others---honestly, after days---it could but not likely. If per se it was only minutes to hours that someone drank after you, then YES the chance for cross contamination is higher and more likely. Viruses survive longer in isotonic solutions. For your bottle of water fore sure it contains some viruses but their survival depend on the time the virus is staying there, the longer the time the lesser the risk. |
