The flu and weird symptoms?


I have had the flu for 2 days now... fever, cough, vomitting, body aches etc.. but today all of a sudden I got horribly dizzy and my heart was beating very rapid and I was short of breath. This lasted for about 2 hours now I still feel a little dizzy and my nose is numb???My doctor has already left for the day.. Any ideas?

Do yourself and your colleagues a favor--stay at home! You may have the flu! Allow your body to fight the virus and become well again. Since your body is working hard to become well again, your energy and concentration is less likely to be at its peak. This will affect your productivity. Furthermore, you put your colleagues at risk of becoming ill because the surfaces you touch (desks, computers, phones, etc.) can remain contaminated for up to two hours after you handle them. So, instead of one person being out of the office for one day, three more may easily become infected and be out of the office for a few days. "And he infected two people, and she infected three, and so on, and so on..." The issue of one person's productivity has now turned into an entire office issue!

Wash your hands

In addition to staying home, there are easy, non-vaccination things you can do to protect yourself and others from catching the flu. One key to avoiding the flu is the washing of the hands. In fact, this is one of the most important things you can do. Frequently washing your hands dislodges and washes away germs that you've picked up from other people or contaminated surfaces. Hand-washing may even prevent other serious diseases--like hepatitis A, meningitis, and infectious diarrhea--if made a habit.


A boiled-down primer on how to wash your hands:

use soap and warm water
rub and scrub all surfaces of your hands vigorously
wash for 15-20 seconds


When should you wash your hands? "Frequently" is one answer, but here are some good times to wash your hands: before, during, and after you prepare food; before you eat; after you use the bathroom; after handling animals or animal waste; when your hands are dirty; when someone in your home is sick.



Tissues, sleeves, pens, and more

While washing your hands is one manner of prevention, here are some other tips to protect yourself and your coworkers from the flu.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; dispose of the tissue.
If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Avoid sharing or lending pens. Bring your own writing utensils to meetings.
Beware of the office kitchen. Keep it clean.
If you get the flu, avoid exposing others. Again, stay home from work!


If you do become ill, here are steps you can take for treatment. Get plenty of rest, drink a lot of liquids, avoid using alcohol and tobacco, and remember that over-the-counter medications help to relieve symptoms of the flu, not cure them. And did we say, "Stay home from work"?



A shotless flu clinic

In a novel approach to the lack of flu vaccine on the Twin Cities campus, Boynton Health Service is planning a "shotless flu clinic." Staff and nursing and pharmacy students are assembling 20,000 flu kits, including hand sanitizers, cough drops, tea bags, facial tissues, chicken soup, and prevention messages. Watch for a release date sometime after Thanksgiving, when you can stop by Boynton during clinic hours to pick one up.


Keep yourself healthy. Preventive measures might save you some suffering and a little pin money by avoiding a trip to the doctor. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

are you taking OTC meds or meds from the Dr ??? could be an allergic reaction to the meds, I'd get to a Dr soon and quit taking the meds...

wow this IS me. I have had the same thing here. I woke up and I stood up and fell down : X. I couldn't get out of bed for a few hours

Surely your doctor has an associate, You need to call him or his answering service. If not, go to the ER.

the dizzy feeling could be from low blood pressure, which is a real possibility when you have fevers and vomiting, due to dehydration

You could have hyperventilated when you had the dizzy spell causing the numbness in your nose. Have you been taking any over the counter cold medicines? They can cause the heart to feel like it is racing. Check in with your doctor as soon as you can. Good luck.

Sounds like a portion (fever, cough, vomiting, body aches) is the stomach flu. If you are taking medications for the symptoms, that might be why you are dizzy.

I am having some of the same symptoms. It started a week ago. For me, it was a combination of my asthma, allergies and flu symptoms. They gave me breathing treatments; did a whole chest panel xrays; put me on an IV for fluids; blood tests; urine test; cough syrup; IB 800; prednisone (pills form steroid); and an inhaler. Get to the doctor in the morning.

the best thing you can do is eat something it wil give you more balence i know it is hard to keep down it wil make you feel beter it sounds like a viral illness so eat a good diet make sure you are driking many flewids prefibally water no high suger jucies or pops however tea is good such as white and green tea not the super sugery iced tea the other thing that you need is alot of sleep for your cells to recover relly unless your takeing somthing to keep down your feaver relly no medicins will help right now finnally try eating two approcots a day that are very ripe it has a vittamin that atacts viruses hope it works and you feel better

It sounds like you got dehydrated - you need electrolytes (like in Pedialyte - in the market's baby section: grape, punch, or plain flavor.) Drink some every few hours, one bottle total each day for 2-3 days, until the dizziness is completely gone. Fever, diarrhea and and vomiting deplete electrolytes. It can get serious quickly, causing dizziness, disorientation, and fainting. Make sure you also notify your doctor. Electrolytes deficiency is a common reason for many people to go to the emergency room during flu season. Save yourself a trip, and do this, first. As told to me by a 10-year EKG technician in a prominent California hospital. Have a healthy and happy new year!

first off vomiting is not a sympyom of the flu but gastrointoritis problems or stomach flu as it is commonly called therefore you are probably just dehydrated from all the vomiting.......... make sure you drink plenty of fluids even if u just puke them back up try gatorade or powerade in small sips also try sucking on ice cubes or sugar free popsicles if you can find them......... if you keep hydrated then you should be ok but if you have another dizzy spell go to the emergency room or after hours clinic imediatly they will probably keep you there over night and give you an i.v to rehydrate you........ hope that helps
