Should I avoid keeping chickens because of the threat of avian bird flu?

I thought it would be neat to keep 3 or 4 hens in a fenced of section of my suburban back yard.. this idea really upset my in-laws and now all they talk about is the flight pattern of birds exposed to bird flu and how they'll give it to the chickens, then my children could get sick.

your in-laws must be very intelligent and clever people cos they seem to know everything about bird flu, keeping chickens and what you should do with your life. they sound really foul to me. do what you want and let them stew in their own diseased little minds!

Ask them over for some chicken noodle soup!!
