Could I get bird flu from this?!?

I live in the U.S. in New York on Long Island so I'm not sure if it's a threat here at all...

Well anyway, my little sister's pet chicken (science fair project) which we hatched from an egg died naturally from prolapse two days ago, and yesterday when the sun came up I buried it. I did not touch it because I carried it using a shovel, but I'm not sure if the bird flu virus could be air-bourne or possibly even maybe a microscopic bit of blood got on me or something (None did as far as I know).

Do you think judging on my location and situation that I could likely get bird flu? Also, if I do, what are the first symptoms?

You are most likely absolutely fine! There have been no documented cases that I am aware of of an animal having the H5N1 strain and no human cases in North America.

There are many strains of the bird flu circulating among birds and other animals. The most likely threat at this point is the H5N1 strain and it has spread widely among birds and other animals all over the world (bird migration doesn't help)

It is mostly confined to birds at this point. The cases where H5N1 strains have jumped to humans, there has been fairly extensive contact between chickens/birds and humans (people who work in close contact with chickens over a long period). There has been a few cases where the bird flu, once inside a human, has jumped to another human in close contact with the infected person. The bird flu will have to mutate further to become more easily transmitted between humans (like the influenza strains B and C, which are what we refer to as the 'flu'........influenza A strains are what are commonly referred to as bird flu.)

To be fair, we don't know which if the strain (H?N?) will cause the next pandemic and so we do not know what exactly it will look like for sure. They may be similar to the "winter" flu, or they may not. Both the huge pandemic in 1918 (where up to 100 million people died) and the other more recent outbreaks (1957, 1968) suggest that the symptoms could be much more severe and distressing.
Hemorhaging (bleeding) is a possibility. Worse yet is the problem of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which happens when the lungs fill up with blood and fluid as the immune system goes into catastrophic overdrive. There may also be a 'cytokine storm' which has a drastic effect on blood vessels and can result in a rapid drop in blood pressure (this is also related to the immune system overdrive). In the 1918 pandemic there was also a lot of cyanosis --- where the skin turns blue as the blood is starved of oxygen by clogged lungs.

It will most likely hardest hit those with current lung problems, immune deficiencies (advanced HIV disease, organ transplant recipients), the elderly, the young....etc.

So, I wouldn't worry just yet! But history has shown us that we are overdue for another 'bird flu' pandemic....
