How long will gastric flu last???

I have had gastric flu for coming up 2 weeks on weds. It started with vomiting continually and i couldnt even sip water without being sick, so I went to hospital for an injection to stop me being sick and put on iv drip. Ever since I have felt really weak, i have lived off toast and rich tea biscuits and water and I tried to eat some soup last week and was sick again but not continually.

I get bad stomach cramps and feel sick most of the time and end up crying loads as I just want to feel better and cant see a light at the end of this damn bug. I have also lost 2 stone.

Has anyone got any idea of how long this could last? any tips on what to eat? or your experiences of this gastric flu?

Thank you.

Stomach flu is not a real "flu," but an infection caused by norovirus.

Norovirus is marked by vomiting, diarrhea and cramps with chills, but no acute fevers. It is usually only supposed to last 72 hours, but new strains have been more virulent, sickening people for a week at a time.

Two weeks is WAY too long for norovirus, so you may need to see your doctor and provide a stool specimen. There is a chance that you are sick with something else and may require a different treatment.

In the meantime, you can take anti-diarrhea and anti-emetic medications to alleviate your symptoms.

When you're all better, you will need to sanitize your home with bleach (1 part bleach to 50 parts water). Bleach will kill the virus; it is an otherwise hardy virus. Launder your soiled clothes and linens in hot water and use bleach if you can.

And from here on out, always wash your hands frequently with hot, soapy water. Norovirus is often spread between people who don't wash properly after using the loo.
