I got a flu shot 2 months ago and have still gotten the flu 4 times?

Can anyone explain to me why this is?
My mom and I both got flu shots 2 months ago and have gotten sick 4x each, including one the very day that we got it.

Are you sure it was flu you got not a common cold? I doubt you could survive 4 instances of flu one after another.

In any case, that suggest you take better care of yourself instead of getting flu shots or in addition to it. I never got a flu shot in my life, and the last time I was sick with a cold was probably 3 years ago - don't quite remember.

Explanation is as follows: Flu virus has many varieties, and each particular one needs a different vaccine. It is not possible to vaccinate againts them all at once or predict exactly which strand of virus you will get, but doctors try their best to protect you agains the most common ones. Yet you could get sick with a different type of virus.

You have NOT had the flu 4 times. You may well have had a cold, but there is a huge difference between a cold and the flu. People often say they have the flu when they are suffering a bad cold, but if you REALLY had the flu you would have been laid up in bed for at least a week, with aches, pains and chills. You would have felt weak and as though the simple act of walking to the toilet was a huge effort.

Flu does NOT mean having a cough, a runny nose or a sore throat. That's a common cold, and there's no prevention or cure for it.

Many people call a common cold the flu. The common cold is completely different from influenza. If you got sick the day you got the shot, it might well have been the flu because it takes about 14 days for your body to make the antibodies to the influenza viruses. Sniffles, sneezing, coughing, feeling miserable is NOT the flu but the common cold.
Also, about 9 months before the flu shot is released, the powers that be decide what strain of flu they will make the shot for. If they guess wrong and a different strain is the big one being spread, then the population at large will not have the required antibodies and the flu shot will do no good. As far as I know, that did not happen this year.
Proof that you did not have the flu all of those times is the fact that you got sick 4 different times. Getting sick with the flu will give immunity to the strain going around that year and so you would not get it a second time.
My sympathies go to you for getting the common cold so many times but you did not get the flu. Sorry

Many things can seem like the flu, but if you had a flu you would be sick for at least a weak.

Sometimes there are also other strains of influenza that people can catch. The vaccination is for the strain that is believed to be the most widespread for any particular year.

If you are getting sick often then you should see a doctor as another problem may be the cause.

I doubt you had the flu 4 times... how long does it last and what are the symptoms? Many things seem like the flu....

  • Why does one get the flu shot in October (at least I did) when the flu season begins in December?

your body needs time to create antibodies (the reason you have it for a while if you catch it). the antibodies are the reason you get the shot in the first place.
