I have the flu now. Why? I had a flu vaccine in December 2007.?

Sabrina,

When I have the flu.... I can cook and type on a computer. easy. I also can drive. I'm not a weakling.

Has it been diagnosed as the flu?
The flu vaccine will only immunise you for the latest virulent strain of the flu, not necessarily all the types that were out and this really should have been made clear to you when you had the jab.
It may be just bad luck that you got one of the other strains but I wish you a speedy recovery. Keep warm and drink plenty.

I TRULY am not trying to be a smart alleck, but IF you had the actual FLU, you would feel WAAAAY to bad to be on the computer. You probably just have a bad cold. Get well soon.

One of two things

Either your resistance has worn off

or

The strain of flu is different than the vaccination protection

you have a different strain of the virus

There are more than one strain of flu virus. The vaccine that is circulated is for the one that the CDC considers its 'best guess' for which one will be most prevalent in the States. They didn't get it perfect.

This year the strain prediction for the vaccines was incorrect. You caught a different strain than what you were vaccinated for.

The flu vaccine is not a cure-all, you can still sometimes get the flu even though you were vaccinated.

The injection just means that you will get a milder dose of the flu and not that you will not get it at all.
Get well soon

Well the flu shot is actually the flu virus itself, only in a very miniscule amount so your body recognizes it and creates the anitbodies to resist it. But there is a small chance that the shot can actually give you the flu. Also the flu shot only protects you from one strand of the flu. There are hundreds of other flu strands you can contract other than the one strand the shot protects you from. Hope you feel better!

The flu vaccine is not always a guarantee. And it can change and mutate which may be different from vaccination. There are different strands of the flu. And you may not have the flu, you may just have a virus with similar symptoms.
