What can we do to protect ourselves from the Avian flu?

I read the article on the front page on yahoo and want to know if there is anything to do?

Once a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza mutates, jumps, and becomes efficiently transmitted from person to person (like the 'winter flu'), it won't matter about contact with chickens or birds.

It seems pretty likely that the virus will spread as winter flu does, through the air when people cough and sneeze. So, there are basic measures you can take to reduce your chances of catching -- and spreading-- the disease. Despite the sudden availability of faced masks on the internet, these are unlikely to prove much use in the general population.
The measures below seem trivial but are still worth taking:

-Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
-dipose of used tissues and handkerchiefs promptly
-Avoid crowded places and non-essential travel
-Above all, be as hygienic as you can -- wash your hands frequently using soap and water
-Wipe clean doorhandles, kitchen work surfaces, and other hard surfaces that people touch regularly
-If you are one of the people at higher risk from winter flu, you should get the regular flu vaccination --- it won't protect you against pandemic flu, but it will protect you from the winter flu which won't disappear simply because there is competition!

Unless you happen to be a chicken farmer, live on a chicken farm, or work around birds a lot- you really don't have much to worry about. Avian flu primarily is deadly to the birds, at the moment anyway. The best way to protect yourself is to not mess around with birds, especially those that are sick, look sick or are dying/dead, with your bare hands. Of course, that's sensible for avoiding lots of nasty things. If it's a wild bird that doesn't act right- that's your first clue to leave it be. If it's a pet bird, not acting right or sick, then a pair of rubber gloves is in order, along with a trip to the vet. Aside from that, common sense sanitation practices will do just fine to keep you healthy.

You can get a flu injection to give you protection

We can get an injection against Avian flu

if you see a sick bird or chicken, call a vet, wash hand always, if you catch a high fever, go to a doctor
