1918 Flu Epidemic?

My 11year old has is doing an assignment on the 1918 Flu Epidemic and looking at it from the the view of Could it Happen today?
Two Questions:
1. What was in the Inhalation Chambers people were encouraged to use? With the benefit of hindsite would this have been more harmful?
2. Chamberlain's cough remedy and various Lung Preservers all claimed to cure Influenza, was there any evidence to back these claims?

I know this doesn't technically answer your question, but check out Spanish Flu on Wikipedia or google. As an amateur virologist, all I can say is it was one amazingly cool virus.
1. Can tell you that Inhalation chambers are still used today, and that they are effective as far as I can tell.
2. Every single one of those cough remedy's etc were fake. Influenza is a virus, not a bacteria. The only way to deal with a virus is to treat the symptoms, not the actual cause. They coulda, mighta had a chance of working on a bacterial infection, but not on a virus.

Random fact: The word influenza comes from the Middle Ages, because people thought that the stars influenced the disease.
