Flu symptoms no fever?

My husband has a sore throat, is nauseous, has chills / sweats, and aches all over, but his temperature is 98.1 (accurate digital oral thermometer). Does anyone know what this could be?

The symptoms of influenza (flu) appear suddenly and often include:

Influenza usually does not cause symptoms in the stomach or intestines, such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Other conditions have symptoms similar to the flu, such as the common cold, bacterial infections, and infectious mononucleosis.

did he open his mouth or laugh when you were taking the temperature? or drink water before? eat a popsicle? usually when you ahve chill/sweats, you have a fever of some kind. Definetelly go to the doctor, just to make sure.
