Flu symptoms- yellow skin?

my brother was admitted to hospital this morning with really bad stomach cramps and a fever. One doc said gastro and to send him home (he is not going to the toilet or vomiting) but another said to keep him overnight for observation so he's staying.
He had aching lower back pain the other day and then started aching all over and assumed it was the flu as his 2 daughters and fiance just had it at their house. Then his skin turned yellow, his eyes are yellow and he said everything looks yellowish. The hospital took his urine and it was red!. My family and i are thinking some kinda liver or kidney infection? Have you seen or had anything similar? Hospitals aren't the most reliable these days so i'm a little concerned. We live in Melb, Vic, Australia and it is flu season so i was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar of late?
He works as a carpenter so could he have possibly swallowed some bacterial dust?....
Thanks for your answers,
concerned sister :)

can you get jaundice at 26yrs old? and he is on no meds as yet
thanks for the answers so far :)

It sounds like jaundice, especially if the whites of his eyes are yellow too. It's most likely to be related to his liver and unrelated to flu season. They'll do some blood tests in regards to his liver function but it could be something very minor so try not to stress! All the best.

The other 2 answers are right, its jaundice caused by a sick liver. Yes you can get it at 26, you can get it at any age but most common in newborn babies as their bodies are not very efficient. Unlikely to be related to his job though possible. There are many causes of jaundice so its best left to the doctors to find out what it is.

The yellowing of the skin is jaundice and is a liver condition. If they started him on any medications, they side effect is red urine. It's still too early to know what it is without an abdominal ultrasound or a ct scan.
