How to take care of a flu person?

thanks a lot

The main thing is hydration all the way. Usually, when someone has the flu, they don't feel like eating or drinking and can get really weak and lethargic. Make sure the person is drinking something with carbohydrates and electrolytes - someone suggested Gatorade - fantastic suggestion along with Powerade or any of those drinks. You can tell if someone is dehydrated if they have darkening under their eyes. Make sure the person is drinking enough to urinate every 2 hours - with the fever you work up during the flu, I can't stress how important hydration is.

If they have a sore throat, headache, or excessively high temperatures, you can give them Nurofen (except if they have a stomach ulcer) but only if it is really needed (Nurofen can also suppress the natural immune response). Since Panadol isn't an anti-inflammatory like Nurofen, it's a better option for pain management during the flu. You kind of want a bit of a temperature to make the virus uncomfortable - they love the ideal 37 degrees Celcius! It's a natural immune response to produce a fever during sickness.

Let the person sleep all they want. Make sure they have a blanket (those feverish chills are terrible) but not so many that they sweat even more.

Make the person soup - I had the flu recently and pumpkin soup really hit the spot. See what their favorite soap is and cook it up. Nothing like it when you have the flu.

Wash your hands whenever you go to prepare food and don't put your hands near your mouth - best way for the viruses to have a chance of entering your system.

If the person has a cough, make sure they cover it with a Kleenex and then throw it out. It will minimise the spread of viral aerosols.

If the person has a blocked up nose and has to breath through the mouth (a challenge with a sore throat), rub Vicks on their chest and set up a Nebuliser (if you have one) with some inhalant in it (such as eucalyptus and menthol) to clear their sinuses and enable them to breath through their nose and give their throat a break.

Take care yourself and dodge those viruses floating around - or take Tamiflu (available from your doctor) as a preventative: if used as a treatment, it must be taken within 48 hours of the onset of flu (in case the person you're looking after is still within that time period).

=)

Is it real influenza or a stomach bug? If it's really the flu, an upper respiratory infection, they need to go see a doctor at the ER, their regular doctor, or a walk-in clinic. If it's a stomach bug (known as gastroenteritis) then the BRAT diet would be best.

B- Bananas
R- Rice (plain white rice with only a little butter and salt)
A- Applesauce
T- Toast (plain is best, but a little jelly is ok if they're keeping it down)

*lots of fluids (soups,juices,exc.)
*rest
*if temperature rises then wet wash cloth over head
*Tylenol for headaches
*and be colse to a garbage can if vomiting occurs=]

Lukewarm baths, Gatorade, water, light non greasy and non dairy snacks (crackers, bananas, plain toast) and over the counter medications.

Rest, drink lots of fluid, soups and wash your hands constantly so you don't catch it. If it appears air born wear a mask to protect from infection.
