Where is the flu virus when it's not "flu season"?

I know people get flu only in the fall and winter, but where is the virus when the first person gets it? In other words, where did the first person catch the flu virus from if there was no one infected all summer long?

It's actually on another continent. The flu virus travels around the world constantly from east to west, mutating along they way as the local population develops a resistance. That's why there are so many different strains and why it hits the same places at roughly the same time. As an aside, it's also how the flu vaccine is made. Scientists isolate the most popular strains in Asia before they hit US shores and vaccinate only for those.

The true origin of the virus would be all but impossible to track as it was around long before humans started keeping records.

Hope this helps!

Influenza circulates in the population continuously. Many "colds" are actually mild cases of flu. We just don't bother to diagnose them. As it circulates, it acquires mutations, some of which increase the transmissibility and/or virulence of the virus, and an epidemic occurs, helped by the weather, human activity, etc. Epidemics also happen when a new strain of influenza if brought hre from another country.

Wow I do not have the answer for you but I am impressed by your ? This is something that I have never thought of and now this will drive me crazy all day thinking about this one. Can not wait to read what others have to say. Great question!!!
