Can you die from the stomach flu? yes, from fever, malnutrition, dehydration, and infection yes, not from the flu itself, but from other conditions resulting from the flu. Yes...but more specifically from a symptom of the stomach flu. Dehydration can kill you. If you are throwing up and have the runs, you lose fluids. If you don't replace those fluids, you can dehydrate. Many of the deaths in 3rd world nations occur due to severe dehydration from just this. My 3 year old daughter was sick last year and had the flu and was losing fluids as described above. She didn't feel like drinking fluids due to the nausea and wasn't replacing the fluids she was losing. We had to take her to the ER and they put her on an IV to rehydrate her. When the stomach flu comes with diarrhea and vomiting, there's a very real threat of dehydration, which can potentially be fatal. That's why doctors always recommend increasing fluid intake, even if you can only keep a little down. If you can't keep anything down at all, intravenous fluids may be required in order to keep you hydrated. |
