Are dairy products bad for you if you have a cold/flu? |
Are dairy products bad for you if you have a cold/flu? Dairy products, such as milk, is not bad for you if you have a cold/flu. It is a myth that milk produces mucus. http://www.intelihealth.com/affil/ih/iht... says: "In a study published in 1990, healthy adults infected with a common cold virus had no increase in congestion or amount of secretions after milk ingestion. In another study, people who believed that milk increased mucus production reported increased sensation of mucus after drinking milk 鈥?but the same sensation occurred when drinking a similarly flavored soy drink that was indistinguishable from milk. Researchers studying people with asthma have found no increase in asthma symptoms or decrease in measured breathing capacity after drinking milk." Source(s): http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.ht... http://www.allergycapital.com.au/pages/m... http://www.dairycouncilofca.org/dairy/da... Cold i'm not sure. Flu yes cause they build up mucus which congests you and can make you be sick. I have heard that dairy products are bad when you have the flu, especially for people with asthma. yes because they enhance the production of mucus My mom always said, "If you have a fever, don't drink milk, it'll curdle." But considering normal is 98.6 and a fever is 100, I'm not sure less that 2 degrees will make that much of a difference. But it really doesn't feel or taste good, so hold off and take in lots of other fluids, but water them down, so they're easier ion your stomach. Your concern is based upon an "old wives tale" that's been around for many, many years. I'm not sure what it is based upon but it is definitely not the case. In retort to the comment that "dairy creates mucus", I must say that it is not the case either. For example, milk may coat your mouth and throat for a few minutes but it does not create mucus. It is another BIG misconception. I believe what you may be thinking of, or refering to, are the restrictions imposed by doctors or the drug manufacturers, on the intake of dairy when using some medications. Some medications simply don't work well with dairy products in your system. Believe todays' scientific positions, and NOT the old wives tales. Hope this helps. |
