How can you tell the difference between food poisioning and the stomach flu bug?

Last Friday night, my mom and I went out to dinner at a Thai restaurant we've gone to the past. The next evening (Saturday) my mom and I both had bowel problems 3 times. She got over it. But I've been having 1-2 episodes per day. Sorry to sound gross, but it wasn't like runny diarrea; just lots of soft stool (sometimes with a light brown color).

The latest is that last night I had pains in my stomach that work me up in the middle of night. After I used the bathroom, I became nautious and almost vomitted but didn't. It's that nausiated feeling that's awful. I was up for 3 hours.

Since that Saturday, I've been taking one Pepsid A/C per day which has been helping, but do I really need to take it continuously? Is this a bad case of food poisioning? Or is it a lingering stomach bug? Or an ulcer? Please help!

Possibly a bug. There are a few going around out there now. If you had food poisoning, you'd be VIOLENTLY ill. (My best friend used to say "it's where you wish you could die, but ya just can't!"
BTW - 1 -2 episodes of diarrhea a day is nothing to worry about. 8 times an hour or more is really what the definition of diarrhea. Source(s): I work for a pediatrician and did phone triage for 6 years.
Food poisoning symptoms occur within 4-12 hours so it doesn't sound like e-coli. Your description doesn't fit your standard stomach flu either. You may want to consult a physician to see what is actually going on.
I think that if it's a bug, you may have a fever.
Seriously, a case of food poisoning, you would be emitting from both ends. I had it years ago and was on the porcelain bowl and at the sink at the same time ... not pleasant!! It also occurs only a few hours after eating, not the next day. Sounds like you might have caught a bug. If it hasn't gotten better, I'd see your doctor.
GO TO YOUR DOCTOR! You could be very sick or you could just have a mild stomach virus or food poisoning. Some kinds of food poisoning can be fatal if left untreated and symptoms persist for more than a day or two. Only a doctor can diagnose you properly.
food poisoning usualy comes on very fast, and ends within 24 hours. the scenario you're describing sounds more like a bug. it should be over in 5-7 days, max. pepcid a/c probably won't do much- it's more for heartburn. but if it makes you feel better, go for it- it won't hurt.
