You need to differentiate between cold and flu.
cold is usually accompanied by a slight rise in body temperature, and it comes slowly over a period of day or two.

Whereas flu, hits hard and fast and your body temperature rises up to 102-104 F in a matter of hours. And it lasts for 3 or 4 days and sometimes even longer.
