What is the actual cause of stomache pains when one has the flu?


It's flu season and as I sit here feeling like there's gremlins trying to claw their way out of my belly, I realized I don't understand what causes the pain itself. Nausea I get, gas I would understand and it isn't, but the stabby pain, (and yes, it's the flu, it's going around and I'm not the only one with the painful symptoms) I don't understand.
