Does anybody no the true link between Gerd and stomach cancer Serious complications, such as bleeding or difficulty swallowing, can occur, although they are rare. Other possible problems caused by acid back-up include inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis), throat, voice box, and airways. If left untreated for years, it is possible but not proven that GERD can lead to cancer of the esophagus. Read my answer from yesterday regarding Barrett's esophagus which is dysplasia (abnormal cells) in the the area where the throat meets the stomach. The same info and links given here for Barrett's apply to stomach cancer. Smoking and drinking are also risk factors for stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is very rare in anyone under age 50. too much acid causes ulcers and when the ulcers get out of control and infected they turn cancerous |
