What medicine is good for GERD?

I am 16 years old, in pretty good health, average weight, etc. I was diagnosed with GERD and a hiatal hernia about a year ago.. i've been on prevacid since December and it isn't helping. I wake up sometimes feeling as though I can't breathe. Lately, my heart feels as though it's racing from not being about to breathe, but that could be me just being scared about it. I hate suffereing from this.. it's so bad. I need to make another appointment with my specialist soon to get things in check again. I've tried tums, prevacid, prilosec, gas ex, etc. Nothing seems to be helping my condition! I'm a pretty healthy eater, a little junk here and there(but who doesnt?) HELP!

Take yogurt, and avoid stimulants, smoking etc. Eat in minor quantity , do physical.
Might be you are under stress, it can cause GERDs, so an antianxiolytic can do wonders.
There are lot of medications, but consult a gastroenterlogist.

Prilosec works amazingly well for me. That or Nexium would probably be good. I think I'm addicted.

I've had very good luck with Zantac (generic name Ranitidine). It now comes in 75mg and 150mg extra strength does over the counter.

I usually leave prank answers, but I couldn't do that to you after reading this. I would honestly try relying on God to help your condition. I know nothing of these conditions, but I do know that Western (U.S.) medicines usually create more harm than good in the long run. I have no medicine in my cabinets, and am very rarely sick. My grandparents are in their 80's and only take medicine for diabetes as it's necessary. Vitamins, 8 hours of sleep, exercise, eating right (as you do) and praying and believing in God to heal your ailments are your BEST solutions. Anything else is temporary. Good luck.

Hi............I'm so sorry you are having such a bad time of it. I have GERD, also, and I really know how bad it can be. I do take Nexium once a day, but, it doesn't do the trick. It is better than other things I've tried, except for one thing. I just started taking Anarax. This med is pretty expensive in my way of thinking, but, it does a lot. Are you cutting out or down on anything with caffeine, sugars, chocolates, garlic, tomato, citric juices, onions, jalepenos, breads, alcohol, and the rest of the 'don't' list? It's really hard for me to not eat the things I am not supposed to eat. I am 5'5", weigh about 120 or just less, and am Italian. Not eating garlic bread with my pasta is really a hard thing! Pasta is so good! I enjoy hot foods, spicy foods, and it is all bad for me. I wear a size 2,3,4 so, I figure I have not made a pig out of myself eating. Still, I know I should be eating foods without spice. That just is so hard!
Good luck in finding a med that will help you.........and soon!

I prefer alternative medications but I take ranitidine. It works very well. I have included some information and the alternative method to assist you if you wish.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Oranges (Juice and fruit)
Lemon (Juice and fruit)
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Potatoes (Starch)
Buffalo wings
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Doughnuts
Brownies
Cake
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Sour Cream
Cottage Cheese
High amounts of Carbohydrates
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
