Would it make sense for a baby with acid reflux (GERD) to want to nurse only while flat on their back?

My almost 3 month old, has suddenly gotten very fussy around eating time. He will latch on only to pull away and cry as if he wants nothing to do with eating. But if i assume he doesn't want to eat, and stop trying to feed him, he will scream as though he's starving, so i put him back on, and the cycles continues. I've researched this behavior plus fussiness, excessive drooling, and spitting up after every meal. From what I can tell he fits the description of GERD/Acid Reflux, except for the fact that he stops screaming and eats only if i lie him flat on his back (which seems counterintuitive to acid reflux). With this in mind, does this seem like acid reflux to you or something else?

(we have an appointment with the pediatrician this afternoon)

my twins used to suffer from reflux and did this too - suckling and then crying and then suckling again. But in my case, this was because I wasn't thinking and ate hot wings. Bad bad bad idea.

You're right.. it does seem to be counter intuitive, but then again, most advice for keeping babies upright is mostly for bottle feeding. Babies get a lot more milk for a very short time with bottles, unlike breastfeeding when they really have to work at it.

good luck to you

My 6 week old just got put on Zantac for his reflux and he is a totally different baby. He would pull away from the breast in pain, arch his back, spit up constantly, and was always very fussy. Now he is back to eating every 2 hours or so, smiling all the time, and not in any pain and he has only been on the meds for 2 days. He is a completely different baby!!!!!!! It sounds like you son could have it, hope your appt. with the Dr. goes well. I really didn't want to put my baby on meds at such a young age but they have made such a difference that I don't even think twice now.

No that doesn't seem consistant with acid reflux but you never really know. My son had acid reflux as a baby and he had to be sat up at an incline after eating. However, who knows your child might find relief that way. I would say no one is going to be able to tell you on here your pediatrician is the best one to advise you on this subject. Good luck!
