GERD can cause a sensation of choking or of a "lump in throat" due to esophageal spasms. Your esophagus spasms because it's being irritated or even damaged (eroded) by your digestive enzymes.

If you have GERD and are not taking medications, please see a physician. If you are taking medications, it can take up to 8 weeks for your esophagus to heal fully. If you've been taking medications for 8 weeks and haven't improved, ask your physician about switching medications.

PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) such as AcipHex, Protonix, Nexium, Prevacid, and Prilosec are usually given for GERD. Although they're all PPIs, each individual is different and sometimes you have to change medications.

A hiatal hernia can certainly cause this sensation. If you haven't been given a test (such as a barium swallow and x-ray), ask your physician about this test.

In one of your previous Questions you asked about chest pain and GERD. GERD can cause chest pain. It can also cause tachycardia, or rapid heartbeat.

Untreated GERD can be deadly; it can result in esophageal cancer. You need to see your physician promptly with this problem.

when the acid refluxs up your esphogus it causes irritation,, thts the lump feeling.. and the sore swallowing..sip some water .. do NOT drink caffeine or pop as this makes the gerd worse.. take rolaids or tums for now but if this has been diagnosed by a dr you should be on prescripton meds and could be ready for surgery...

It sounds like it may be just a feeling, I read this article here which you may or may not have seen and may find useful if you are wondering if you are alone in this.
