Explain why GERD would cause a productive cough?

Explain why GERD would cause a productive cough?

In the Gastroesophageal reflux disease, the problem is that acid from the stomach enters the esophagus causing irritation. When the acid ascends through the esophagus it can reach the larynx and also irritate it producing laryngitis, which producing cough.
Also one of the main problems of GERD is aspirational pneumonia, this means that some of the acid, goes up, gets to the larynx and when the person breathes, is aspirated to the lungs, where it causes a lot of damage to the tissues, and can result in pneumonia. One of the main symptoms of pneumonia is productive cough.

If you had pneumonia, the the other symptoms would be: chest pain, high fever, shortness of breath.
Anyway productive cough is not normal, and could be caused by a lot of different things.
So why wonder? Go to your doctor and find out.
Good luck! Report It
