What are some foods that a person with acid reflux or GERD must absolutely AVOID (specifics please not just..)

vague like "things with acid".

Apparently my doctor told me I have GERD which is GastroEsophagael Reflux Disease so I need to know what I can and cannot eat. Please help, any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciates

I hope this helps. A lot of problems come from how/what we eat and combine our foods together. Let me explain.

It was the first time I cooked dinner for my then-boyfriend. I didn鈥檛 know it back then, but my own cure began with a question from this man who would later become my husband(Mike)

Shortly after we met, I made dinner for him and he asked if it would be alright if he didn't eat one of the foods I had prepared. He said it all looked wonderful, but that the combination would give him a stomach ache. I didn't know what he meant, since nothing was fried and no hot spices were used.

It was then that he asked me the question that literally changed my life forever!

Mike asked me, 鈥淗ave you heard of food combining?鈥?br>
My immediate answer was "no" I hadn't heard of it. Even though it wasn't anything new, and had been endorsed by many health experts, peak performance experts and celebrities and more - I really had never heard of FOOD COMBINING.

After hearing about how "mis-combining" leads to acidosis, acid-reflux, heartburn and a host of other digestive problems, I had my first "properly combined" meal...

And I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPTOMS WHATSOEVER!

NO PAIN! NOTHING!

That鈥檚 right...

NO cramps
NO bloated stomach
NO excessive gas
NO 鈥業BS鈥?br> NO acid reflux
NO constipation
NO running to the bathroom
NO horrendous pain

Can you imagine how relieved I felt after all those years? If you have ever suffered any of these symptoms, even mildly, you will understand why I was wild with joy!

Acid reflux can be caused by a LACK of stomach acid and can be tested very simply!! If symptom occurs take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar!! If the symptom goes away ,you are lacking in stomach acid !! Betaine HCL will -in pill form- will help greatly -if not solve the prob.. Take an enzyme when you eat and that will also help greatly in digestion-whether or not your stomach acid is lacking!! A good enzyme which can be gotten at most health food stores is "Wobenzyme " !!! Even people without a problem can take enzymes and will get more from their food and feel better -more energy etc. Probiotics should also be supplemented for good GI function!!

Chocolate, coffee, tea iced or hot-Any thing with caffeine
French fries, potato chips, Fritos-fried foods
Beer, bourbon, Scotch-Alcohol
Most people have specific things that bother them too, but the above are on the avoid list. Salsa really bothers my husband and he is Mexican.
Sleep with the head of your bed elevated Bricks under the head of the bed will help
Don't over eat
Don't eat before going to bed for at least 2 hours.
Try not to bend over with your head lower than your stomach.

I've been told to avoid: onions, chocolate, coffee (even decaf - it's the oil, not the caffeine), mint, and greasy foods. Interestingly, I've been told that spicey foods like peppers should NOT be a problem.

In the end, though, it has to go by the simple rule that if you develop discomfort after eating a particular food, that food should be avoided in the future.

You should AVOID these things:
fatty foods
spicy foods
chocolate
caffeine
onions
tomato sauce
carbonated drinks
mint
alcohol
large meals
lying down too soon after eating
certain meds: sedatives, antidepressants, calcium, channel blockers for high B.P., and cigarette smoking.
I don't/can't eat after 6 pm. or I'm up all night with heartburn. Sometimes I still get sick and end up chocking on crap while sleeping.(wakes me up)(SUCKS)
