Question about gerd acid reflux?

I was taking Nexuim 40 miligrams and when i went back to see the doctor 6 months after i was on nexium 40 miligrams he changed my prescripation to prevacid 30 miligrams and i have been taking prevacid for 3 weeks now and i dont think its working i am having problems swallowing food and drinks again. i thought nexium and prevacid were similair meds. any one have info on this.

The difference has nothing to do with the milligrams. The drugs are essentially the same. I have heard a doctor describe the difference between all of these medications (Prevacid, protonix, nexium, prilosec and others) like this: they are all brothers. They all work exactly the same way. They have the same chemical make up with just one slight (supposedly insignificant) difference in their makeup. No one really knows why some of these medications work better for some people. Some insurance companies will only pay for one and not the others. Nexium and Zegerid are the most expensive right now (I believe), so maybe your doctor thought he would be saving you money? Source(s): I am a Registered Nurse that works with a large GastroIntestinal Clientele
They are pretty smiliar, however Prevacid did not work for me either, also have a friend with the same problem. Nexium is the only thing thats works for the both of us. Not sure if its the difference in milligrams or what.
Experience
I've been taking Prilosec fo a number of years. One a day works great for me. Thinl prevacid is a little weaker or operates on a different function. I wish you luck.
