Jaleesa: The stomach also has a sphincter. But it does sound funny I know.
A loose sphincter can be the cause, but also your stomach has pumps that can create excessive amounts of acid that returns up into your esophagus without your sphincter being loose. Did they tell you the reason you had gastroenterology reflux disease because the sphincter was loose. My husband has GERD and his sphincter tightens to the point he has to have it stretched. This causes him to have trouble swallowing his food. But his GERD comes from his stomach acids burning back up into the esophagus. What could cause it to loosen or tighten, I'm not sure.
What causes ur Lower esophagal sphincter to loosen is still unknown at the moment.

But I have read at a few places that smoking makes an already weak sphincter weaker. So its a good idea for you not to smoke
