How can you really tell if you have GERD? |
It would be nicer from people with experience rather than from technical info. Most cases of GERD can be accurately diagnosed on the the type of symptoms you have and that the symptoms are relieved by taking antacids (such as Zantac/Gaviscon) Classic symptoms of GERD are heartburn and food/fluid pushing up into the mouth. GERD can present with other symptoms when additional tests may be needed to make an accurate diagnosis. These symptoms may include painful swallowing, asthma, chest pain, hoarseness and chronic cough. The most accurate test for the diagnosis of GERD is one that measures the acid level in the esophagus over a 24 hour period. The acid level in the esophagus is then compared to notes the patient keeps that record when symptoms occurred. what is gerd? GERD presents as chest pain so there's a need to rule out that it is not a cardiac problem. If it is cleared by the doctor as not a cardiac problem, antacids or proton pump inhibitors (meds that help in GERD) would relieve the symptoms. Medication takes about two weeks. In two weeks, if it is not relieved, other medical procedures should be taken. my boyfriend had a CHRONIC cough at night and in the mornings. he said that he coughed because he had a "tickle in the back of his throat", he would cough so hard at times that he would throw up....then he said he felt better (probably by getting rid of the acid). He would get heartburn really bad, and would not want to eat because of it. He would not get sleep at night because his cough would keep him up. It actaully started to affect our relationship...we sleep in the same bed and we both werent getting much sleep. I started reading some of my Nursing books (i am a nursing student) and i think the chronic cough and tickle in the throat is what made me believe that he had gerd. I finally scheduled an appointment for him to see a Dr. we couldnt take it anymore. And the Dr diagonsed him with gerd. he has been of aciphex for about a month now and it is working miracles!! If you think you have gerd and dont have insurance try prilosec. Prilosec is an over the counter drug--a little expensive but well worth it if you are experiencing Gerd. (my b/f took prilosec for about 2 weeks before he got his aciphex perscription). Prilosec used to be perscription, but there are so many people who have GERD I think the insurance companies wanted it to be over the counter. If you do have insurance...let your doctor monitor you while you are on any meds even if it is an OTC drug. my boyfriend |
