I think i have GERD (acid reflux disease) is there a way i can still drink beer/alcohol w.out the pain ofGERD? Is there any way you can do with the beer/alcohol if you have GERD? Is the beer/alcohol that important in your life that you cannot give it up even if you have a medical disease? If it is, maybe you need to check out a few AA Meetings. They can help you out and give you support. Probably not. try taking antacid before drinking. you should probably consult a doctor though I have GERD and Barrett's Esophagus and it's very unpleasant, that's for sure. I am on Zegerid 40 mg twice a day and it doesn't completely help. Carbonated beverages are taboo for us sufferer's. I will have some in moderation, just as long as it's not an everyday thing and depending on how bad you have it, you should be ok. Play it safe though by consulting with your Gastroenterologist....best of luck. Actually, the pain of GERD, is triggered in very many cases, by the ingestion of alcohol,.....because alcohol increases the secretion of pepsine and hydrochloric acid by the oxyntic cells of the walls of the stomach... Ifyou drink alcohol, and can recline, with no pain, its time to re think the diagnosis....gastroesophagic reflux, as you well know, if left untreated, can cause damage to the esophagus, and cancerous changes in the cells of tle lower quarter of it... Even if you are on derivatives of inhibition of the protonic pump, that will not protect you from the long term comsequences,,, Most of the time GERD is due to obesity, hyatal hernia, etc...90 % of the syndrome is caused by hyatal hernia (sliding type If I were you, I would fix the problem (the cause) first, by laparoscopic surgery (short staying in hospital), it is extremely curable, and worry about alcohol afterwards... Thats what I should do.... Hope you get better...please dont drink until properly prescibed.. Cheers Licensed surgeon (Germany) One thing you can try - raising the upper body during sleep. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux disease or in mild cases heartburn, is an increasingly common condition in the developed world, characterized by frequent regurgitations of stomach acid into the lower esophagus. GERD can often be caused by a hiatal hernia, a condition where part of the stomach slips above the diaphragm to contact the esophagus. If left untreated, damage caused by severe GERD can cause replacement of the normal cells lining the esophagus by other tissue types (a condition known as Barrett鈥檚 esophagus), eventually leading to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. While acid-suppressive medications can be used, their potential side effects and complications can be avoided through a variety of simpler treatment measures. This review article finds significant clinical evidence for the efficacy of lifestyle-based treatments for heartburn and GERD, including elevation of the head of the bed. Sleeping on a wedge diminishes exposure of the esophagus to refluxed acid. see www.contourliving.com for wedges and other help. |
