Hello all. I am located near St. Louis, MO. My question is I am looking for a lab or company that can do a test to determine my genetic makeup. I know I am German, Irish, English, French, and have some American Indian in me, but I am wondering to what % (on the American Indian) and what tribe. I wonder if there is anyway this is possible? If anyone has any info. it would be much appreciated! Here is the FAQ page for the company I used.

There are others. The full-blown test is $300 or so. You might get by with less. It can't tell percentages, just markers. They do it by mail, so where you live in the USA doesn't matter.
The only time they get specific is if you and another son of a son of a son . . . (someone with the same surname as you) match on 12, 25 or 37 specific markers. A 12-point match means basically you and the other guy are White or Black; there is an 80% chance of a common ancestor in the last 600 years. If you go back to 1400, there is a LOT of commonality.
37 points (which costs more) narrows it down. In my case, there was a Pack in Maryland in the 1700's and one in what is now WV shortly after. The WV one didn't say why he decided to settle 6 ridges west of the law, but some of us had our guesses.
He didn't talk about his ancestors, either. The 37-point match between Samuel (my 7th GGF from WV) and another man, who descends from the Maryland Pack, proved Sam was related somehow; son, grandson, nephew, grand nephew, second cousin twice removed . . .
This matching only works if a bunch of people with the same surname get tested by the same company. I used GeneTree.com
I am currently awaiting my results. |
